Pregnancy is one of the most gruelling things a woman can put her body through. Getting a massage can be really beneficial  but there a quite a lot of preconceptions around getting a massage when you are pregnant and whether or not it is safe.

One of our massage therapists Yoshiko Beer specialises in Pregnancy Massage so I thought I would asked her a few questions to shed some light!

What exactly is pregnancy massage?

“This gentle massage has been specifically adapted to suit the needs of pregnant women.  It is a soothing and relaxing massage that will help relieve muscular tension as well as other physical and emotional discomforts resulting from the body going through the physiological changes of pregnancy as the baby grows.”

What can I expect during the treatment?

“The treatment consists of a back massage (the client is in a comfortable side-lying position) working particularly on the postural muscles of the back, as well as the shoulders, arms and hips followed by a leg massage.”

Is there anything I should be aware of before I decide to book a pregnancy massage?

“Pregnancy massage not recommended in the first trimester (1 to 12 weeks). Also, women with certain health conditions may not be able to have pregnancy massage. I would always ask my clients to acquire a doctor’s note for appointments made in the first trimester. Any involved complications as pre-eclampsia, low placenta, gestational diabetes, etc.., will require a note as well.”

Some of the benefits of having a massage whilst pregnant

  • Reduces anxiety, stress and tension
  • Reduces swelling in arms and legs
  • Relieves aches and pains in muscles and joints
  • Improves circulation
  • Promotes relaxation and a good sleep!
