7 Mistakes made when dealing with back pain

Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to be focusing on back pain, posting regular bits of advice on how to manage back pain and debunking the myths that come along with back pain! Today we are focusing on the 7 most common mistakes you might be making when dealing with pain. Could this be YOU!? Read on to find out if you are making any of these common mistakes…

Mistake number 1

Ignoring the pain, thinking it will go away on its own.

Getting on with things and thinking the pain will go away may eventually work, but it will take a long time if it works. Doing something about your pain will give you a chance to recover much more quickly and reduces the risk of the issue happening again.

Mistake number 2

Trusting in medication, hoping this will resolve the issue.

Whilst it is true that medication can help relieve pain, it won’t treat the real source of the problem. You should see a healthcare professional who can diagnose the problem and advise on a recovery plan.

Mistake number 3

Following the advice of a friend to manage symptoms.

What works for one person will not necessarily work for another. We are all different and our bodies are made up differently. Back pain can come from a number of different sources for a number of different reasons. It is key that you seek professional advice to diagnose the root cause of the problem.

Mistake number 4

Doing exercise that can aggravate the situation.

Whilst exercise is a very important part of recovery and it is important to keep moving, the exercise you are doing should be specific to YOU! Having an understanding of what is actually wrong is crucial to help you make a more informed decision of what exercise would be good for you.

Mistake number 5

Rushing back to regular activities.

Rushing back to your regular activities too quickly can be detrimental to your recovery. Too much stressful activity on the body whilst in a weakened state can escalate your back pain. Take advise from your healthcare professional about when it would be safe to return to your regular activity.

Mistake number 6

Playing it too safe.

Current research suggests that manual therapy and exercise is the best action to take to help recover from back pain. Although it is important to incorporate rest into your recovery, resting for too long may worsen your symptoms.

Mistake number 7

Waiting too long to ask for help.

The longer you wait to ask the right person for help, the longer you suffer. You may also prolong the amount of time it will take to recover. Our advice is to seek professional help ASAP.
